Headline variant tester
Variants side by side on length, structure and reading level — the measurable half, said to be indicators and not a prediction of anything.
It runs entirely in this browser tab: nothing is posted, nothing is scheduled, and nothing you type is uploaded.
Settings
- Cut at
- Where a search result stops showing the title. It varies with the width of the words. A number from 30 to 120.
- Show the reading level
- A school grade, from sentence and word length. It was designed for English.
- Show the shape
- Numbers, questions, strong words and hollow ones — named rather than scored.
- The main term
- Whether it is at the front, later on, or not there at all.
How to use it
- Paste your text into the box above, or open a file.
- Adjust the settings beside it until the result is what you wanted.
- Copy the result, or save it as a file. The result updates as you type.
Questions
- Can this post or schedule anything?
- No, and it never will from a page like this. Posting on a schedule needs an account, a key and a server; there is none of that here and no network request is made. The calendar plans, and the result says so.
- Are the character limits current?
- They are the published figures as of the month printed on every result. Platforms change them without notice and nothing here can check, which is exactly why the date is on the page rather than implied.
- Is anything I paste in stored?
- No. It stays in this tab, and in the link if you choose to share one. There is no account, no server and no history kept anywhere.
- Why do the mockups say MOCKUP on them?
- Because a picture that could pass for a screenshot of somebody's real account is a tool for making fake evidence. The label is drawn on the picture, no setting removes it, and the mockups imitate no particular application: no logo, no verification tick, no platform name.
Other tools for before it goes out
Email subject line checker
Where four inboxes cut it, what the preview text fills in, and a folklore word list that says on the result that it is folklore.
Thumbnail readability checker
A thumbnail at the widths it is actually shown at, with the contrast of its nine parts and how much fine detail survives the shrinking. No text recognition.
